The best armor in Rust is a Metal Facemask and a Metal Chest Plate over a hoodie. Add a road sign kilt, pants, boots and road sign gloves. This kit stops half of every bullet to your head and 55% to your torso. An Assault Rifle (AK) then needs 2 headshots or 5 body shots to kill you, not 1 and 2.
No Level 3 workbench yet? Wear a coffee can helmet and a road sign jacket instead. On the body you lose only 5 points. Heavy plate stops far more, but you pay for it in sight and speed.
Every number here comes from the game's own files: protection values, body areas, hit multipliers and recipes. Hit counts assume a vanilla server, 100 health, armor in full condition and close range. Want raw gun damage before armor? See Rust Weapon Damage: What Kills a Player, and How Fast.
How does armor protection work in Rust?
Know how armor stacks, and you know which piece to craft next. Every piece of clothing has a protection value for each damage type: bullet, arrow, slash, stab, blunt, explosion, fire and more. Each piece also covers certain body areas.
A hit lands on one area: head, chest, stomach, arm, hand, leg or foot. The game adds up the protection of everything you wear there. It caps the total at 100% and lets the rest through. Say you wear a Hoodie (20% against bullets), a Metal Chest Plate (25%) and Road Sign Gloves (10%). A torso shot loses 55%.
Three details change how you should dress:
- Gloves protect your torso. In the game's data, gloves cover the chest, stomach, arms and hands, just like a shirt. So their 5–10% counts on every body shot. Boots and shoes cover the legs and feet, like pants.
- Your head takes double. A bullet to the head does twice its damage. An arrow does 1.5 times, buckshot 1.25 times. A hit to the legs or feet does only 0.75 of it. Head armor cuts the biggest number, so a helmet is the first upgrade worth making.
- Some armor makes things worse. Wood armor has −100% fire protection, and heavy plate even less. The cap turns that into double fire damage. Road sign and metal pieces have negative cold protection, so they make you colder.
Here is every piece: what it stops, how long it lasts and what it costs. Melee damage comes in three kinds: slash (swords, machetes), stab (spears) and blunt (clubs, rocks).

What is the best armor early in a wipe?
Early on, a cheap set can win you the fight against a bow or a spear. Four sets need no workbench at all.
Against bullets, Bone Armor wins. One piece covers your torso, arms and legs. It stops 25% of bullets and arrows and 40% of melee and explosions. With a Bone Helmet the set costs 100 Bone Fragments and 30 Cloth. A Hunting Bow then needs 3 arrows to your body instead of 2.
Wood armor is the melee set. The Wood Chestplate, Wood Armor Pants and Wood Armor Gloves stop 40–50% of slash, stab and blunt damage to the body. But they stop only 10–17% of bullets, and fire hurts you double. With the Wood Armor Helmet the set costs 650 Wood and 65 cloth.
Hide is the cheapest leather set. A Hide Poncho and Hide Vest give 25% against bullets on the torso. The poncho's 40% against stabs makes it the best answer to spears.
A Level 1 Workbench adds two helmets. The Riot Helmet stops 80% of melee damage to the head. The Wolf Headdress stops 30% of bullets and 80% of explosions, if you have a wolf skull to make it. But all of this gear still lets 70% or more of a rifle headshot through. None of it is armor for a gunfight.
Tip
Fighting spears early? Wear hide, not wood. A Stone Spear needs 7 stabs to your chest through a Hide Poncho and Hide Vest. Through wood armor it needs 6, through bone 5.
What should you wear mid-wipe: road sign and coffee can?
Most fights happen in this kit, so get it right. A Level 2 Workbench unlocks:
- a Coffee Can Helmet
- a Road Sign Jacket over a hoodie
- a Road Sign Kilt over Pants
- Boots and Road Sign Gloves
It stops 35% of bullets to the head, 50% to the torso and 45% to the legs. Against melee it stops 50–65% on the body. An Assault Rifle needs 2 headshots, 4 to the chest or 5 to the legs.
The whole kit takes 4 Road Signs, 10 Sewing Kits, 70 Leather, 95 cloth and 75 Metal Fragments. And it lasts. The jacket has 500 durability, more than the facemask (320) or chest plate (360) that replace it later. The coffee can has 200 and the kilt 150. One catch: no road sign piece does anything against explosions.
Watch out
A coffee can helmet won't save you from a one-shot by a Bolt Action Rifle. Its 80 damage doubles to 160 on the head. After 35% protection, 104 is left, more than your 100 health. A Metal Facemask leaves 80, so it takes two shots.
What is the best late-game armor?
At a Level 3 Workbench you swap two pieces, and the big win is your head. The Metal Facemask stops 50% of bullets and arrows to the head, 70% of melee and 50% of explosions. It has 320 durability. It costs 50 leather, 15 High Quality Metal and 6 sewing kits, plus 120 scrap to research. With it, an Assault Rifle headshot does exactly half your health. So it takes two.
The Metal Chest Plate is the smaller upgrade. It stops 25% of bullets, the road sign jacket 20%. So the torso goes from 50% to 55%. An Assault Rifle now needs 5 body shots, not 4. Against melee it is worse: 20% against slash, where the jacket has 25%. It costs 50 leather, 18 high quality metal and 8 sewing kits. Short on high quality metal? Make the facemask first.
Crafted clothing can also take Metal Armor Inserts. The data has no numbers for them, so every figure here is for the garment alone.
Is heavy plate armor worth it?
Heavy plate turns you into a tank, and tanks are slow. The Heavy Plate Helmet, Heavy Plate Jacket and Heavy Plate Pants stop 90% of bullets to the head and 75% to the body. They also stop 70–80% of melee and all explosion damage. An Assault Rifle needs 10 headshots, 8 to the chest or 11 to the legs.
The helmet stops more than the body plates, so aim for the chest. Each piece has 1,000 durability. The set needs only a Level 2 workbench, 5 Sheet Metal and 16 high quality metal.
The game's own descriptions name the price. The helmet cuts your vision. The jacket stops you aiming down sights. All three pieces slow you down, though the data doesn't say by how much.
Pros
Cons
- 10 rifle headshots and 8 body shots to kill you, against 2 and 5 in a metal kit
- Full protection against explosions
- 1,000 durability per piece, and only a Level 2 workbench
- No aiming down sights with the jacket on
- You move slower and see less
- Fire does double damage
- Sheet metal for every piece
When is a hazmat suit the right armor?
Heading into radiation? That's what the Hazmat Suit is for. One piece covers your whole body: 30% against bullets, arrows, melee and explosions. Plus 50% against radiation and cold. It takes a Level 2 workbench, 4 Tarp, 2 sewing kits and 7 high quality metal.
It is a monument suit, not a fighting kit. Its 30% on the head is less than a coffee can. Its 30% on the torso is less than a hoodie under a road sign jacket. An Assault Rifle still kills you in 2 headshots or 3 body shots.
How many shots does each armor set take?
This is where you see if an upgrade is worth the grind. The sets are the ones above:
- Burlap: headwrap, shirt, trousers, shoes and gloves.
- Hide: headwrap, poncho, vest, pants and boots.
- Bone: the helmet and the suit.
- Wood: helmet, chestplate, pants and gloves.
- Heavy plate: its three pieces, worn alone.

Close range, before damage falls off, every hit on the same area. Sets are the ones in the table above; the kits list every piece they include. A range such as 5–6 sits on a rounding edge: the same set can take either count.
Road sign to metal costs the enemy one more AK shot to your body. With an LR-300, it's one more headshot. Heavy plate is a whole different fight.

Sewing kits and road signs can be looted, or crafted at a Level 3 workbench. The crafting calculator breaks any kit down to raw materials. Every piece also has its own page under Rust Items.
FAQ
What is the best armor in Rust?
For a gunfight: a Metal Facemask and Metal Chest Plate over a hoodie, plus a road sign kilt, pants, boots and road sign gloves. That's 50% bullet protection on the head and 55% on the torso. Heavy plate stops more, but costs you aim, sight and speed.
Is the metal facemask better than the coffee can helmet?
Yes. It stops 50% of bullets, the coffee can 35%. It is also what stops a Bolt Action Rifle killing you with one headshot.
How many AK shots to kill someone in full metal?
2 headshots, 5 to the chest or 5 to the legs at close range. With no armor at all, it's 1, 2 and 3.
Do gloves and boots matter?
Yes. Gloves add their protection to every torso hit, and boots to every leg hit. Road Sign Gloves add 10% against bullets to your whole torso.
Does heavy plate armor slow you down?
Yes. The game says all three pieces slow you down. The helmet also cuts your vision, and the jacket stops you aiming down sights.
Is a hazmat suit good for PvP?
No. Its 30% against bullets everywhere is less than a road sign kit gives your torso, or a coffee can your head. Wear it for radiation.
