Shoes made out of burlap.

An hour into the wipe, you are walking the main road with a rock, cracking barrels, and your feet are bare on the asphalt. Burlap shoes fix that for ten cloth. They will not save you from much, but they add a little against the cold and close a gap in a cheap outfit.

Tip

Queue them in the crafting menu and keep walking. Crafting carries on while you move, so the shoes are on your feet before the next barrel.

Once you have hunted, hide boots are the natural swap: leather instead of cloth, still no bench, and a bit more protection all round. Most fresh players run one or the other for the first day.

The real upgrade is a pair of boots, which want a Level 2 workbench, leather, frags and a sewing kit. Until then, burlap shoes are a placeholder, and nobody cries over a lost pair.
