Rust Codex (rust-codex.com) is a wiki for players of the game Rust. You can read every page without an account, and we have built the site to learn as little about you as possible. This page says exactly what that little is.

The short version

  • We set no cookies and run no third-party trackers, analytics or advertising scripts.
  • We count page views and clicks on sponsored links, without your IP address, without any identifier and without anything that could tell one reader from another.
  • Our network provider, Cloudflare, sees your IP address in order to deliver the site and protect it from attacks.
  • If you switch between the light and dark look, your choice is kept in your own browser and never sent to us.

Who is responsible

The controller of this website under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is:

Aleksandr Losiev
Lustdorfskaya Road 123/2
65088 Odessa
Ukraine
Email: [email protected]

Write to that address with any question about this page or your data.

Page views

When a page opens, a small script on it tells our server that it was viewed. For each view we store:

  • the address of the page and its language;
  • the time, rounded down to the minute;
  • your country, as our network provider determines it from your IP address;
  • the kind of device — phone, tablet or computer — read from your browser's User-Agent header;
  • the name of the website that linked you here, if any (for example, google.com) — the name only, not the address of the page you came from;
  • whether the request looks like it came from a bot.

Your IP address and the full User-Agent are used for a moment to work out the country, the device type and the bot flag, and are then discarded; they are never written to our database or our logs. We do not use cookies, fingerprinting or any identifier for this count, so we cannot tell whether two views came from the same person.

Individual views are kept for 90 days. After that only daily totals remain (for example, “this page, this day, Germany, phone: 40 views”), and those are kept indefinitely.

Some pages carry advertisements, such as links to game-server hosting providers. Some of these are affiliate links: if you buy something after following one, the provider may pay us a commission. It costs you nothing extra. These links are marked as sponsored, and they pass through a short address on our own site (/go/…) before sending you on.

When you follow one, we record which ad it was, which page you clicked it on and where on the page it was, the time rounded down to the minute, your country and your kind of device — the same limited facts as for a view, and with no IP address, User-Agent or identifier stored. Individual clicks are kept for 90 days, daily totals indefinitely.

Once you arrive at the advertiser's website, its own privacy policy applies. Affiliate programmes usually set a cookie on the advertiser's site so that the provider can credit the referral to us. We do not receive that cookie or anything the advertiser learns about you.

Why we are allowed to do this

The view and click counts contain nothing that identifies you, and we believe they are not personal data. To the extent that any of it is, we process it on the basis of our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in knowing which pages are read, keeping the site working and secure, and being paid for the advertising that funds it. We chose the most limited way to do that which still works.

Cloudflare

The site is delivered through Cloudflare, Inc. (101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA), which acts as our content delivery network and protects the site against attacks and abuse. Every request passes through Cloudflare, which therefore processes your IP address, the page requested, your browser's headers and similar technical data. Images are stored with and served by Cloudflare as well (from media.gsn.observer).

Cloudflare processes this data on our behalf under a data processing agreement. It may transfer data to the United States; Cloudflare is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and also uses the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. If its security systems suspect automated traffic, Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie (such as __cf_bm) or show a challenge page. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in delivering the site quickly and keeping it available and secure (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Hosting and server logs

Our server is operated by OVH in Frankfurt, Germany. Its software does not record visitors' IP addresses. Technical logs (errors, start-up messages) are rotated automatically and kept only for a short time.

Cookies and storage in your browser

This site sets no cookies of its own.

If you use the light/dark switch, your choice (the word light or dark, under the name scheme) is saved in your browser's local storage, so that the next page opens in the look you picked. It is saved only when you press the switch, it never leaves your device, and we cannot read it. Choosing “Match my device” removes it, and you can delete it at any time by clearing your browser's site data.

What we do not do

  • No Google Analytics, advertising networks, social-media widgets or other third-party scripts.
  • No fonts or libraries loaded from other companies' servers — everything the page needs comes from us.
  • No accounts, sign-in, comments or forms.
  • No profiling, no automated decisions about you, and no selling or sharing of data with anyone other than the service providers named here.

If you email us

If you write to us, we use your email address and what you write only to answer you, and we delete the conversation once it is no longer needed. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering you (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), or taking steps you asked for (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR).

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable form. Write to us at the address above. Please note that the view and click counts contain nothing that links them to you, so in most cases we will be unable to find any data about you in them (Article 11 GDPR).

You also have the right to complain to a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU country where you live or work.

Children

The site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect — for example, if we add Google Analytics or an advertising network, which would only ever load after you agree to it in a consent banner — this page will be updated before the change takes effect, and the date at the top will change.
