Characteristics
Overview
A Furnace. Use it to smelt mined ore.
Ore is worth nothing until it has been through one of these. Metal ore comes out as frags, sulfur ore as sulfur and high quality ore as high quality metal, while the wood you burn turns into charcoal for gunpowder. Crude oil is the exception: it goes to a refinery, not here.
No workbench is needed, so on most wipes it is the next thing down after the cupboard and a sleeping bag. The part that holds you up is the 50 low grade fuel in the recipe. There is no refinery yet, so you kill a boar for fat, pull some hemp for cloth and craft the fuel by hand. Stones and wood are the easy half.
One furnace keeps up with a solo farming in short trips. A group coming home with full bags wants a row of them behind a door, and later a large furnace, which takes far more ore at once but needs a Level 2 bench and has to stand on open ground where raiders can reach it.
Watch out
Switch it off when the ore is gone. A lit furnace keeps burning wood with nothing left to smelt, and its glow in a window at night tells everyone passing that someone is home and farming.

Direct hit, hard side, no duds. Satchel Charge is a dud 20% of the time. Beancan Grenade is a dud 15% of the time. A range runs from point blank to the far end of the bullet's falloff, fired from an Assault Rifle.
