Overview
Used to smelt large quantities of ore. Difficult to secure, must be placed on terrain.
You build it when one furnace per farming trip stops keeping up. A duo comes back from a monument with bags of ore and a loaded horse, dumps the lot in here and walks off, while a row of small furnaces wants feeding slot by slot. Most groups put one down the day after the Level 2 workbench goes in.
The recipe is the first hurdle. 75 low grade fuel on top of 500 stones and 600 wood means a refinery or an evening of fat and cloth, and the 60 scrap to learn it hurts on day two.
Placement is the second. It goes on bare terrain only, never on a foundation, so it will never sit inside your honeycomb. Groups build the walls around it instead: a small furnace room with a dirt floor, or a yard behind high stone walls. The game itself suggests a floor grill above it, so the floor overhead stays usable without sealing the furnace in.
Watch out
Nothing on it locks. Whoever reaches it opens it and walks off with a night's worth of ore and charcoal, so empty it before you log off.

Direct hit, hard side, no duds. Satchel Charge is a dud 20% of the time. Beancan Grenade is a dud 15% of the time. A range runs from point blank to the far end of the bullet's falloff, fired from an Assault Rifle.
