Tool

Satchel Charge

The first raid tool most groups can make: four beancans tied up at a Level 1 bench. Fine on wooden doors, wasteful on stone, and it can fail to go off.

Overview

In-game description
Small explosive package constructed of beancan grenades. Useful for destroying wood and sheet metal doors.

Satchels are how a fresh group opens its first base. Day two, the neighbours on the hill have a stone 2x1 with a wooden door, and you have a Level 1 bench and a sulfur node behind your house. That is a satchel raid.

Each one is four beancan grenades tied up with a rope in a small stash, so the real cost is gunpowder. Doors are where they make sense; the game's own text names wood and sheet metal doors. Walls are another story. Blowing through stone with satchels eats far more sulfur than doing it with C4 or rockets, and those are what you save for once your bench allows.

Watch out

Satchels can dud. If one does not go off, do not run straight back to it: a dud can still blow while you reach for it to relight. Give it a moment before you go near.

Carry a couple more than you think the door needs. A raid that stalls one satchel short gives the owners time to log in, and the second door behind the first is the usual surprise.
