Characteristics
Overview
Byproduct from campfires and furnaces used for crafting gunpowder.
Gun powder, and almost nothing else. Every piece of wood that burns in a campfire, a furnace or an oil refinery leaves charcoal behind, so hardly anyone farms it on purpose. It piles up on its own while you cook and smelt.
The trouble starts when you get serious about boom. Each batch of gun powder eats thirty charcoal against twenty sulfur, and plenty of groups spend a night on sulfur nodes only to find the furnaces were the bottleneck all along. You open the box: thousands of sulfur, a few hundred charcoal, and the raid moves to tomorrow.
Tip
Never let the furnace that smelts your sulfur run out of wood. The charcoal drops into the output slots next to the sulfur, so empty them every time you walk past.
Beyond that it has no real job. The Christmas snowman takes some, and the recycler hands a little back from gun powder. An electric furnace makes none at all, since nothing burns in it.
