Overview
A hatch that opens and changes into a ladder.
Stairs eat a whole square of floor. A ladder hatch eats none: closed, you walk over it; opened, it drops a ladder and you climb through. That makes it the usual pick for roof access, for a small base where every square counts, and for a quick drop from the shooting floor to the loot below.
It needs a Level 2 workbench, 300 metal fragments, a wooden ladder and three gears. The gears are the catch. You can only craft them at Level 3, so early on they come from crates and barrels, and the hatch competes with everything else that wants them.
Watch out
An open hatch is a hole in your floor. You come back from a roam, open the roof hatch to check for campers, then get busy sorting loot, and anyone who reaches the roof walks straight in. Close it every time and keep a lock on it.
It is not the toughest piece of a floor, so raiders on your roof may go for it first. Once your floors go armoured, swap to the armoured ladder hatch. Triangle floor frames take the triangle ladder hatch instead.
