Mortar

An arcing launcher for lobbing shells over walls at players in the open. Its shells barely scratch buildings, so do not mistake it for a raid tool.

Overview

In-game description
The Mortar fires in an arcing trajectory and favors volume over precision. Pairs well with binoculars.

Lob explosives over a wall at people you cannot shoot. The mortar fires in a high arc, so a group dug in behind cover, a camp outside your base or a crowd at a monument is in reach without a clean line of sight. The game's own text says it favors volume over precision: expect to send a lot of shells and walk them onto the target.

Load the shell for the job. The fragmentation shell is the anti-player round, lethal over a large area by its description, and one craft gives three. The plain mortar shell is high explosive, takes twice the gunpowder per craft for only two and, by its own text, does minor structural damage. So this is not your new way into a stone base. Rockets and C4 still do that job.

Tip

Bring a second player with binoculars. Whoever fires cannot see where shells land behind the wall, the spotter can, and calling corrections over voice saves a stack of shells.

The launcher itself is cheap at a Level 2 workbench: high quality metal and a single metal pipe. The shells are where it hurts, since every craft of either kind eats another pipe on top of the gunpowder.
