Overview
Will suck up any dropped items in it's radius while powered
Drop it, and it ends up in storage. That is the trick a hopper gives a base. Come back from a monument run, stand in the drop room, throw your inventory on the floor, and while it has power the hopper sucks up everything in its radius.
On its own that is just a tidy floor. The good part is what follows. Pipe an industrial conveyor out of it with a filter for each kind of loot, and the scrap, the components and the ammo find their own boxes while you are already back outside. A large wood box per category at the end of the line is plenty for most groups.
It works only while powered, so the first thing after placing it is a line from your battery with the wire tool. A hopper that is off is a piece of metal in the corner.
The recipe is 200 metal fragments and one gear at a Level 1 bench. Early in a wipe that gear still comes from crates and the recycler, so most groups build the hopper once their conveyors already run.

Direct hit, hard side, no duds. Satchel Charge is a dud 20% of the time. Beancan Grenade is a dud 15% of the time. A range runs from point blank to the far end of the bullet's falloff, fired from an Assault Rifle.
