Metal Spring

The part that gates real rifles: an AK takes four. A Level 3 craft that costs a lot of scrap, so early springs come from loot and go into guns first.

Overview

In-game description
A metal spring. Used to provide motion or resistance in objects.

An elite crate hands you a rifle body and you rush home to craft an AK. Then the bench asks for four springs and you have two. That moment is why springs matter: they are the part you run out of while everything else is ready. The L96 and the M249 want even more.

Lower down they are spread thin. A semi-automatic rifle, a pump shotgun and most SMGs take one each, so through the mid wipe a handful covers a whole group. Crafting your own waits for a Level 3 bench, and at 50 scrap and two HQM apiece it is not cheap, so most early springs come out of crates and the guns you break down.

Two habits help. Keep them out of the door closer until your guns are covered: the base door can wait, a missing AK cannot. And when the box finally overflows, a spare is decent scrap, since the ordinary recycler gives ten scrap and a piece of HQM for one. Crafting springs just to recycle them throws most of the cost away, though.
