Overview
High damage, high rate of fire, belt fed light machine gun.
Seasonal event loot aside, the M249 comes from two places: the crates the patrol helicopter drops when you shoot it down, and the ones Bradley leaves behind. No research, no blueprint. So most M249s on a server belong to the groups strong enough to take those fights, and you meet them again on those groups' roofs.
It is belt-fed, holds far more rounds than any rifle and fires ordinary 5.56 ammo. That makes it a tool for holding ground: a roof during an online raid, a compound wall, a monument you are locking down. Many players also like it for finishing the patrol heli and for clearing turrets in loot rooms. They add that it is far easier to control standing still, especially with a holosight.
Pros
Cons
- Long sprays without stopping to reload
- Each bullet hits harder than an AK round
- A long reload once the belt runs dry
- You cannot craft a replacement when you lose it
If you want something like it from your own blueprint, the HMLMG is the craftable cousin. It is a little weaker and harder to control, but you can make another one tomorrow, and it eats the same incendiary and standard rounds.
