Catapult

A horse-towed siege engine that lobs bombs over walls. Its aim is poor, so it pays off against a base that sits still, not against players on the move.

Overview

In-game description
An improvised catapult siege weapon. Built for flinging destructive projectiles with questionable accuracy. Can be towed by horses.

Hitch it to a horse, park it out of easy reach and throw things over walls. That is the whole job. The game itself calls the accuracy questionable, so the catapult suits a target that cannot dodge: a compound, a ring of high external walls, a base that holds still while you walk your shots onto it.

What you load decides the raid. Propane explosive bombs are the ones for buildings; their text calls them devastating to structures, and each eats a propane tank and a heavy stack of gunpowder. Scattershot is only stone, a wide spread of rocks for anything soft or anyone caught in the open. Firebombs set things burning, and bee bombs drop a swarm on whoever defends the roof.

Next to rockets the appeal is the bench. Rockets need Level 3; the catapult and its propane bombs stop at Level 2, so a group without a Level 3 workbench can still siege a stone base. Whether it costs less sulfur per wall than rockets is worth testing on your server before you commit a whole stockpile.

Towing works with a single horse saddle. Once you unhitch, leave the horse behind cover: the ride home is long without it.
