Characteristics
Overview
You can repair your items here for a fraction of their construction cost. You may also use this to apply new skins to existing items.
Patch up what you already own instead of crafting it again. Drop a worn gun or tool into the bench and it shows you the bill: a fraction of what the item cost to make, paid from the boxes in your base. The bench itself is 125 metal fragments at a Level 1 workbench, so it belongs in the first base you build, right next to those boxes.
Picture the evening after an Oil Rig run. Your assault rifle is down to a sliver of condition, the hatchet is nearly broken and the jackhammer you looted last week is not far behind. Crafting all of that again would cost a fortune, and the AK needs its blueprint and a Level 3 bench on top. Here the whole lot costs a slice of that.
Watch out
Every repair also lowers the item's maximum condition, the red part of the bar. A gun you fix again and again wears out for good, so swap a badly worn one for a fresh craft before a big fight.
It is the skin station too. A skin from your Steam inventory goes onto an item you already carry, no new craft needed. If your base has no bench yet, Outpost and Bandit Camp have public ones.

Direct hit, hard side, no duds. Satchel Charge is a dud 20% of the time. Beancan Grenade is a dud 15% of the time. A range runs from point blank to the far end of the bullet's falloff, fired from an Assault Rifle.
