Metal Blade

The part behind every salvaged melee weapon and tool. Roadside barrels drop them early, a Level 2 bench makes them cheap, so the real question is where they go.

Overview

In-game description
A Metal Blade for making melee weapons.

Your first blade should almost always become a salvaged sword: one blade and a few frags at a Level 1 bench buy a melee weapon that lasts. The blades after that decide more. Five of them and a pipe make a salvaged axe or its icepick twin, the farming tools that pull more wood and ore per swing, and six go into a chainsaw.

On a fresh wipe they come out of barrels along the roads. Picture the first run: you break barrels from the beach to the nearest monument and walk home with two blades, a pipe and a pocket of scrap. Sword now, the spare blade into the box, because it is the start of an axe. Once a Level 2 workbench is down, blades stop depending on luck: 30 frags and 10 scrap each, and the blueprint costs 30 scrap to research.

Tip

Do not feed spare blades to the recycler. It gives back half the frags and a couple of scrap, less than you paid. Recycle what they went into instead: a broken longsword usually returns a blade, and a worn salvaged axe several.
