Ammunition

12 Gauge Buckshot

Your default shotgun load for fights inside a base or at a doorway. It hits brutally up close, but the pellets scatter fast once the target backs off.

Overview

In-game description
Ammunition for a Shotgun.

You load buckshot when the fight is going to happen at arm's length: clearing a compound, pushing up a stairwell, holding the one door a raider has to come through. Nothing you get early in a wipe trades better at that distance, and even a sloppy shot lands enough pellets to matter.

Any shotgun takes it. A waterpipe with buckshot is the classic first-day door camper, while a pump shotgun lets you hold a corridor without being left empty after one miss. Once the target is a few strides away, though, the spread eats your damage. That is the job for slugs. The usual newcomer mistake is winning the door fight and then chasing the guy across an open field with a pump.

Tip

Carry a stack on you even on a farming run. An empty shotgun while someone is already standing in your doorway usually costs the whole kit.

Before your bench catches up, most people shoot handmade shells, which go easier on your gunpowder. Buckshot is the upgrade you feel immediately: same guns, same doorways, far fewer shots per kill.
