Overview

In-game description
Just like mom used to make. Provides a boost to hunger, health and hydration. Increases the chance of better genes from crops for short time.

It is food for the farm, not for a fight. Like every pie it tops up hunger, health and hydration, but the part that matters sits in the last line of the game text: for a short time, crops are more likely to give you better genes. So you eat it at the planters, at the moment you are about to harvest and take cuttings.

That moment comes once per round. Say your first bed of corn from wild seeds is ripe, and you plan to pick the lot, keep the seeds and take a clone or two from the strongest plant. Eat the pie, then work through the whole large planter box in one go, without sorting your inventory or chatting on voice. The timer is short, and a pie eaten on the walk over is half spent before you reach the first plant.

Do not expect it to rescue a bed of weak plants on its own. Start from the best plant you have and let the pie tilt the odds a little further your way.

Cook it at the Cooking Workbench. The rich chicken pie is the same idea with cream added, and its text says it greatly increases the chance instead.
