Shoe the horse that does your long runs. By their own text these add movement speed, and on the way home from a monument with a full bag and someone on your tail, a slightly faster horse decides whether you reach your base or end up as a loot bag on the road.
The price is low: fifty metal fragments at a Level 1 workbench, and every player knows the blueprint from the start, no research needed. That makes them the natural next buy after the single horse saddle you claimed the horse with. They wear down like any gear, so check their condition before a long ride.
The step up is the high quality horse shoes: a Level 2 bench, high quality metal and 30 scrap of research. Expect more speed from the dearer pair, though its game text is word for word the same and gives no figure.
A shod horse left loose by the base is wasted metal. Tie it to a hitch and trough before you log off.
