Overview

In-game description
A basic wooden shield, won't last very long. Usable with single handed weapons and tools.

A strip of open grass lies between the treeline and your 2x1, and a bow player is lying on the rocks above it. With this on your arm and a machete in your hand you cross that strip facing him, and the arrows meant for you hit wood. That is its honest use: getting from cover to cover while someone shoots.

It costs twenty cloth and 250 wood with no bench, exactly the price of a wood chestplate. On day one that is the real choice. The chestplate works with every weapon you own, the shield only beside a one-handed one, and most fresh spawns fight with a bow.

Watch out

Pull a bow, a rifle or anything else held in both hands and the shield stops helping. Sort your hotbar before the fight, not during it.

All three shields list 300 durability. Its own text admits this one won't last very long, though, so expect each hit to take more out of it than out of the reinforced wooden shield at Level 1 or the metal shield at Level 2. And only this one needs no research: every player knows it from the start, while the other two cost sixty scrap each to learn.
