Overview
A Hatchet, useful for chopping trees and dismembering corpses.
Put down your first bench and craft two things before anything else: this and a pickaxe. A Level 1 workbench, 75 frags and 100 wood buy you a tool with 400 durability, against 100 on the stone hatchet. It chops faster too, and it gets more out of an animal carcass.
Pros
Cons
- Cheap enough that losing it to a roamer stings for a minute, not an hour
- Lasts four times as long as the stone version
- Only 30 scrap to research, so it is one of the first blueprints you learn
- Needs metal fragments, so you want a furnace going or a few barrels cracked
- Swings faster but brings in less per hit than a Salvaged Axe
The Abyss, Frontier and Prototype hatchets share its recipe, bench and durability in the data. Pick whichever model you like; the job stays the same.
Later in the wipe, groups farming wood for charcoal often move on to a chainsaw, which burns low grade fuel but drops a tree far faster.
