Most of the crafting time here goes into fuel, not engine. The low grade fuel in the recipe takes 13 crafts of a recipe every player knows from the start, and the last craft leaves two spare. Build engines in pairs and the batches come out even. The game's own text says more engines mean more speed, so the second one is rarely wasted.
The real wait is the gears. The engine is a Level 2 blueprint, but a gear of your own takes a Level 3 bench and a heap of scrap, so in the mid wipe every engine runs on gears from crates, barrels and the recycler. Those are the same gears a garage door wants, and a door protects the loot the boat brings home.
Until the gears turn up, a sail gets the hull moving for a tarp and some wood. The high quality metal is the easy line; one furnace run covers it.
