Those two gears are also a garage door. If your loot room still sits behind a sheet metal door, ask which one keeps more of your stuff tonight. Power for a turret is a fair answer. Power for lights is not.
Then plan the running cost. The bill ends at the bench, but the generator burns low grade fuel for as long as it is switched on. On a river bank the water wheel takes the same two gears and never asks for fuel.
