About this craft
Every composter is a large planter you chose not to build. Both take the same two tarps and the same wood, and tarps are what a young farm runs short of. Nine seeds in the ground grow cloth and food; the composter only turns waste into fertilizer, and a farm of one or two boxes makes little waste.
So build planters first, and the composter once a whole row of them leaves dead plants and spare crops behind. Everyone knows the recipe from the start and it needs no bench, which makes it easy to craft too early.
The unfolded calculator prices the tarps as cloth at a Level 2 bench. That line is fiction: tarps are never crafted, and every one comes from road loot, the recycler or a trade.
Tip
A composter you no longer need belongs in the recycler. The ordinary one returns a tarp every time, and that is already a small planter.
