Wood is the main resource on the default view, and that hides the bill. Each bee grenade inside is counted as is; unfold them and every bomb asks for two beehive nuclei plus a heap of cloth. Nobody farms nuclei the way they farm sulfur, so this is the catapult round you stock by the handful, not by the box.
A nucleus in a hive makes honeycomb all wipe; in a bomb it makes one swarm. Groups that throw bees run a few hives first and extract the comb by hand, which now and then turns up a spare nucleus. That makes the beehive the real first step of this recipe, well before the Level 2 bench.
Tip
Sulfur is the reason to bother. A propane bomb swallows a big pile of gun powder and this one none at all, so a group saving every bit of sulfur for rockets still has something to drop on the roof.
