About this craft
Before you fell a single tree, find two ropes. The wood comes off a couple of trees, the rod needs no bench, and its blueprint is one everybody knows from the start. Rope is the snag: no bench crafts it, so after a fresh beach spawn it comes from barrels along the road, and later from crates and recycled gear.
That puts the rod in a queue. The same pair of ropes makes a crossbow, which also feeds you while deer are around. On a bare coast with nothing to hunt, the rod gets them.
Tip
A worn rod belongs in the recycler, not on the ground. It returns one rope, which is half of the next rod.
