Characteristics
Overview
These red berry seeds can be planted in the ground and grown to collect additional food. Planting these seeds in a planter, and then watering them with large quantities of water yields significantly more berries and faster growth.
Seeds are how you find a better red berry plant than the one you already clone. Most players treat them as the first rung and forget them once the clones take over. For steady harvests that is fair, but a clone line only ever repeats its parent. It never improves by itself.
Say the line your group runs is decent and nothing more. Every roam past a wild red bush brings home another seed or two. Instead of letting them gather dust, push them into a small planter box of their own, not into the clone beds, so the newcomers cannot pass their genes into the line you depend on. Water it as well as the others. The seed's own text promises significantly more berries and faster growth from a planter given plenty of water, and a thirsty test bed tells you nothing.
Most of what comes up will be worse than your line. Now and then one plant beats it. That plant becomes the new parent: cut clones from it and replace the old bed. Meanwhile the test box still yields red berries for the Mixing Table, so the experiment costs you almost nothing.
