Overview

In-game description
Hearty mutton pie, provides a boost to hunger, health and hydration. Livestock grow used to you twice as fast, and are far less likely to turn on you, for a short time.

Bake it for one reason: you are working with livestock and they do not trust you yet. Like every pie it gives a boost to hunger, health and hydration, but the game text adds the part that matters. For a short time, livestock grow used to you twice as fast and are far less likely to turn on you.

That only means something if there are animals to win over. The game texts talk about livestock that graze and eat from a hitch and trough when grass runs short, but they never say plainly where those animals come from, and servers differ. Check how yours handles them before you save mutton for pies.

Say your group has a few animals inside an animal fence behind the base, still jumpy around everyone. Whoever goes in to deal with them eats a pie at the gate, so the short window is spent with the herd and not on the walk over from the box.

By its own text it is a mutton pie, so raw mutton you would otherwise cook into steaks goes to the Cooking Workbench instead. No herd, no reason: a plain steak fills you up without the extra trip. The rich shepherds pie adds cream and speeds the trust up further.
