Prototype Hatchet

Despite the name, nothing experimental: its row matches the plain hatchet on bench, recipe and durability. A different model for the same job.

Overview

In-game description
A prototype field hatchet, useful for gathering wood

Wood, and only wood, if you go by its game text. In practice it covers the same ground as the regular hatchet, because every number in its row is a copy: Level 1 bench, 75 frags, 100 wood, 400 durability, 30 scrap. The word prototype suggests an improved version. The data does not back that up.

It comes as a pair with the Prototype Pickaxe, and both look like field gear rather than something hammered together at home. If that matters to you, craft them together and your hotbar matches.

Say you are cutting down the trees around a new base to upgrade your walls to wood. With this one or the plain hatchet, you should finish at the same time. If you want more wood out of each swing, look at the Salvaged Axe once you have a Level 2 bench.
