Overview

In-game description
Building blocks of a hive, taken from a natural beehive. Can be cooked in a furnace to guarantee honey, or extracted for honey and a small chance of a nucleus.

Each piece is a small choice between honey for sure and a lottery ticket. Its own text gives two ways to open it. Cook it in a furnace and you are guaranteed a jar of honey. Extract it by hand and it gives honey too, plus a small chance of a beehive nucleus.

The nucleus is what makes the choice. Without one, a beehive at home is an empty box, and the only comb you will ever see is whatever you break out of a wild hive. So until a nucleus sits in your own hive, extract every piece by hand. The furnace's guarantee is worth less than a shot at your own colony.

Imagine hauling wood home and breaking open a wild hive on the way. Take the comb and open each piece from your inventory as you walk, rather than tossing the lot into the furnace with your ore.

Once your hive is running and a spare nucleus sits in a box, the logic flips. Then the comb is just honey waiting to happen, and the furnace is the tidy, reliable way to get it.
