Herring

Plan your fishing meals around it. The game says herring turns up in a variety of water sources, so it is the fish you can count on whether your base looks out on the sea, a river or a quiet lake inland. Any single one is small. Together they add up.

Say you play solo from a wooden hut by a lake, far from the coast, and the boars nearby have been hunted out. A handmade fishing rod and a stack of worms are all you need, and an hour on the shore brings back a row of herring. Ten fit in a slot, so gut them with a knife before you run out of room. Each gives a little raw fish, and raw fish stacks better than whole fish do.

After that it is just the camp fire. Cook the pile, eat as you go, and the lake keeps feeding you on days when the woods give you nothing. No recipe asks for a whole herring, so none of them needs to make it home in one piece.
