Characteristics
Overview
A large, whiskered fresh water based predator. Eats everything, so you never know what you'll find in it's stomach.
Gut it for food, unless it is big enough to brag about. A catfish is the heavy end of what comes up on a handmade fishing rod, and its own description calls it a fresh water predator, so you look for it in rivers and lakes rather than off a pier on the coast.
Say you spend an evening on a riverbank and the bites keep coming. Catfish stack only to five, so a few good casts turn your inventory into a row of whole fish with no room left for wood. Gut them right there with a knife. Each one leaves a bigger pile of raw fish than the small catch does, and that pile stacks far better on the walk home. At the fire it becomes cooked fish.
The game text also jokes that you never know what is in its stomach. Treat anything extra that drops while you gut it as a bonus; the meat is why you fish for it.
Tip
Keep the best one whole. A fish trophy takes the fish as it is, and once it is gutted there is nothing left to mount.
