With the Level 2 bench up and the blueprint learned, the bench is not what holds you back for the next day or two. Crafting road signs and sewing kits both need a Level 3 bench, so every jacket before then is two signs and two kits that somebody carried home from a road run or pulled out of the recycler.
So set up the box before you spend the scrap. Signs and kits go into one chest kept for armour, and nobody turns a sign into a cleaver or a shield while a teammate still runs around in burlap. Leather is the easy line; it comes with every hunt.
Watch out
Don't recycle a spare sign for its metal while anyone in the group lacks a jacket. The recycler gives back a little HQM and scrap, and the next jacket waits for another road run.
Learn it before the kilt: same research, and it covers your chest. The step after is the metal chest plate, which wants four times the kits and a Level 3 bench.
