An old rusty key that can open the door to an apartment.
Rusty, old and tied to one place: by the game text it can open the door to an apartment, and that is everything the data here knows. No recipe, no research, nothing it goes into and nothing a recycler gives back. Its shortname calls it a master key, which hints at a building with several flats rather than a single door.
It has nothing to do with your own base. Doors you lock yourself open with a door key made at a key lock, or with a code, and no apartment key gets past either.
So if one lands in your inventory after a run, think back to where you picked it up and look for a locked apartment door nearby before you drop it. Otherwise it is one of the misc items that only take up a slot.
