600 sulfur and a metal pipe per craft, and the craft yields two shells. Shell for shell it costs three times the frag round, for minor damage to walls.
Type in one shell and the calculator charges you for two. A craft always yields a pair, so the sulfur on the page pays for both, and an odd order leaves a spare shell in the box. It is not lost, since it waits for the next barrage, but think in pairs.
Next to the fragmentation shell this is the dear round. Frag gets three shells out of half the gun powder, so shell for shell the HE costs three times the sulfur, and its own game text promises only minor structural damage. Keep HE for turrets and other deployables; a group in the open is a job frag does for a third of the price.
Watch out
The metal pipe is the hard limit. The shells and the mortar itself are Level 2 blueprints, but crafting pipes waits for Level 3, so until then every pair of shells is a pipe from a barrel, a crate or a recycled gun. Once you decide to run a mortar, keep pipes out of the recycler.
