Sheet metal decides how many of these your group wears. Sheet metal can't be crafted or researched, whatever the unfolded calculator says about HQM, frags and scrap at Level 3: every sheet comes from crates, road loot or the recycler. So the helmet competes with walls. Every sheet you put in a helmet is a craft of high external stone walls your compound won't get.
The blueprint costs little and sits at Level 2, a full tier before the metal facemask. For a group that loots its sheets, that makes it the hard head armour of the mid wipe. Learn it for the player who holds the base, not for everyone.
Watch out
Don't recycle a worn helmet to rescue its sheets. Only half come back, so wear it until it breaks.
If sheets are short, start the set with the heavy plate pants: one sheet, and neither your view nor your sights suffer.
