The bottom rung of the salvaged ladder: 50 frags and a pipe at a Level 1 bench. The frags are nothing; the pipe could have been an icepick.

About this craft

Only the metal pipe takes any effort. The metal fragments are one furnace load, and the blueprint is the cheapest of the salvaged tools. But a pipe can't be crafted before a Level 3 bench, so this Level 1 recipe still waits on a road barrel, and the salvaged icepick and the axe are waiting for the same barrel.

So count pipes before you click craft. A spare one, with an icepick or an axe already in the base: go ahead. One pipe and no gathering tool yet: the pipe goes up the ladder.

Watch out

The recycler gives a hammer's pipe back only about half the time. Once it is a hammer, count the pipe as spent.

For cheap melee that ties up no pipe at all, a salvaged sword needs a single blade.
