Only one row separates it from the single armored door, and that row is metal. Same five gears, same Level 3 bench, same research cost, plus a little more high quality metal for a frame that, as far as players can tell, holds no longer against explosives. The double door is the price of a wide doorway, not an upgrade.
The gears are where groups stall. Crafting all five yourself costs 500 scrap, several times the blueprint, so most doors in a wipe are built from gears pulled out of crates and the recycler. Give them a box of their own.
Tip
Have the armored door crafted before the sheet metal double door comes out. An empty wide frame is the softest spot in the wall.
