Fit it right before a big unlocking spree at one bench. The game text takes 20% off the scrap price of every tech tree unlock at the bench it sits on, and it promises nothing beyond that.
The maths is short. Every 500 scrap of full-price unlocks at that bench costs you 400 instead. You cannot craft or research the upgrade itself, whatever its recipe on this page says, so it only comes from loot or a trade. A spare one recycles into two or three gears and 30 scrap at most, so the bench you pick matters.
Say your duo just finished a Level 2 workbench, with 700 scrap in the box and a Salvage upgrade from a crate. Planning to work through most of that tree over the week? Then the upgrade goes on that bench before the first unlock. Need just one gun tonight? Then it hardly matters where it sits.
Watch out
The text names tech tree unlocks only. Learning a found item at the research table costs what it always did, and the discount on one bench does nothing for the tree of another.
Recycling
At power grid stage 2 a green recycler works at 60% instead of 50%. Yields depend on the recycler.
