Count the lanterns you will actually light before you queue them. Purple is a skin of the plain sky lantern, so it has no blueprint or research of its own and costs the same cloth and fuel. You pick the colour while crafting, if you own it.
The trap is the spare stack. A lantern that never flew turns back into materials badly: the ordinary recycler returns about half the cloth and only part of the low grade fuel. Early in a wipe that cloth was worth more almost anywhere else than in paper.
So craft them on the evening you send them up. The purple lantern flies like the other four colours, and leftover cloth keeps better in a box.
