Half the rope of a regular crossbow, twice the frags, and a gear on top. Frags you can farm in an evening. The gear is the one part you cannot just go and make: its own craft waits for a Level 3 workbench and eats 100 scrap, which no group spends on an early bow weapon.
So the gear comes from loot. Crates and road barrels drop them; put the first one in the weapon box, not the recycler. The blueprint itself is a cheap Level 1 pick, so learn it once a gear is already in hand, not before.
A worn mini crossbow gives its gear back only some of the time, so count the gear as spent. If your first shots land anyway, the crossbow costs one more rope and nothing rare.
