Cloth is nearly the whole bill. Each lantern takes 25 cloth and only a splash of low grade fuel, so a hallway lined with them is really a hemp field you walked through. Pull hemp on every trip home in the days before you hang them.
There is nothing to research. It shows up in the crafting menu of players who own it on Steam and nowhere else, so scrap and benches change nothing.
Watch the fuel batches. One lantern uses only part of a fuel craft and leaves the rest in your pockets. Crafted in fours, any mix of red and white, the fuel divides exactly.
If all you need is light, the plain lantern costs frags instead of cloth, and every player has it.
